Agriculture and Food Chemical Treatment and Residue Detection
SGS performs chemical treatment and residue analysis on sawn wood, timber and pallets to improve quality and safety levels and ensure regulatory compliance.
Our global presence means that we can offer this service at source, as well as at all export and import points. And because our standardized reporting considers the defined industry regulations, we make commodity trading and deliveries less contentious and open to dispute.
Wooden packaging materials need to be treated to ensure that transported goods – especially commodities and/or fresh produce for human or animal consumption – are not contaminated.
To verify which pallets are to be discarded, we test residues relating to:
- Copper (including decomposition)
- Other detected microbiological organisms
- Pentachlorophenol (PCP)
- Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
- Tribromoanisole (TBA)
- Tribromophenol (TBP)
We test for the chemical treatments on poles and other timber to verify the preservation method(s) used, which is particularly important in climates where insect infestation can occur. If poles are intended for use in electric power distribution and the support of telephone lines, we also assess sizing, quality control and bending strength.

Our testing capabilities may vary depending on the region of service provision. You are welcome to contact our agricultural services (AGRI) team for a specific list of the tests we are able to carry out for you.
